School Values & PB4L

We are currently on our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) journey. The Positive Behaviour for Learning framework is guiding us to build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

PB4L looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence and is tailored to our school’s own environment and cultural needs.  It’s about having systems and practices in place to support students to make positive behaviour choices.

As part of our PB4L journey we have consulted with the community and have made the decision to update our Freyberg Community School values so that they better reflect the expectations, principles and aspirations of our learners, whānau and wider community.

The design process began with consultation of the OECD’s Social and Emotional Skills for Well-being, Connectedness and Success document. This source document outlines a range of values and skills that will be central to the ability of our current learners to achieve success, connectedness and well-being in the future roles that they take on in our societies.

Our school communities were then consulted to ensure that the final values selected from an extensive range best represented their aspirations for our learners.

The following values were decided on, forming the acronym C.O.R.E which will enable learners to better engage and recall these values from a young age –

Creativity – Auahatanga

Over time and with guidance and encouragement, our learners will become increasingly able to use novel ways to do or think about things through exploring, learning from failure, insight and vision.

We explore different ways of doing things and learn from our mistakes.

Optimism – Ngākau rorotu

Over time and with guidance and encouragement, our learners will become increasingly able to adopt positive and optimistic expectations for self and life.

We have positive attitudes and growth mindsets.

Resilience – Aumangea

Over time and with guidance and encouragement, our learners will become increasingly able to use effective strategies for regulating temper, anger or irritation in the face of frustrations and display effectiveness in being able to calmly solve problems.

We work hard to solve problems when we meet them.

Empathy – Aroha

Over time and with guidance and encouragement, our learners will become increasingly able to display kindness and caring for others and their well being that leads to valuing and investing in relationships.

We are kind and caring to others and to our environment.
